Lesotho Education Quality for Equality

The Government of the Lesotho (GOL) signed an agreement with the International Development Agency (IDA) of the World Bank to support implementation of the Lesotho Education Quality for Equality Project (P156001) (LEQEP) for a total value of US$25 million in May 2016. The project aims to improve basic education service delivery and student retention in targeted schools.

The three components of the project are:

• Improving the Teaching and Learning Environment in Targeted Primary and Junior Secondary Schools (US$15.11 million)
• Strengthening School Accountability for Student Learning and Retention in Targeted Schools (US$4.78 million)
• Strengthening Institutional Capacity and Project Management (US$5.11 million).

The Project is expected to run for 5 years starting 2016 to 2021 and the World Bank is supervising entity.

PROJECT BENEFICIARIES

The project beneficiaries include:

• 53,000 students from 312 primary schools in 2017
• additional 6,500 new entrants to Grade 1 in 2019, 2020 and 2021
• 12,000 students in 65 junior secondary schools in the same catchment areas as primary
• 1,400 primary teachers
• 200 junior secondary teachers
• 100 district resource teachers (DRTs) subject advisors, and inspectors

Lesotho Basic Education Improvement Project

The Kingdom of Lesotho, through the Ministry of Education and training, has received grant financing from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) to support implementation of the Lesotho Basic Education Improvement Project (LBEIP) for a three year period, 2017 to 2020. The GPE funded project in the amount of US$ 2.1 million will address the same key issues in the education system as Lesotho Education Quality for Equality Project (LEQEP) and will have the same objective and similar scope but will target additional schools that are among the next-lowest-performing preprimary schools, primary schools and junior secondary schools in the same catchment areas.

The three components of the project are:

• Improving the Teaching and Learning Environment in Targeted Primary and Junior Secondary Schools (US$1.15 million)
• Strengthening School Accountability for Student Learning and Retention in Targeted Schools (US$0.37 million)
• Strengthening Institutional Capacity and Project Management (US$0.58 million).

The project is expected to benefit approximately 5,100 beneficiaries by early 2020.

This figure includes:

• 4,100 students from 20 primary schools
• 900 students from six junior secondary schools in the same catchment areas
• 173 preprimary schools, primary, and junior secondary teachers
• 26 school boards (which includes school principals and school heads)
